MBIT’s Local Advisory Council President, Dr. Janice Solkov, a fifteen-year cancer survivor, avid volunteer, and Doylestown resident, found another way to give back to our community. In addition to working with Middle Bucks Institute of Technology, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Bucks County, and other local organizations, Dr. Solkov along with her friend Lynn Tegler of Pipersville, PA, thought it would be fun to donate hair together with the help of the Cosmetology Program at MBIT.
Dr. Solkov connected with Mrs. JoAnn McLaughlin, Cosmetology Teacher at MBIT, and turned the donation into a teaching opportunity for all students to learn proper technique and procedure, to successfully donate to organizations who take donated hair to make wigs. Two students were selected to participate in the donation cut. Carly Prichett, a Senior at William Tennent High School, and Michaela Nahill, a Senior at Central Bucks South, both third year cosmetology students did the honors.
Dr. Solkov who had previously donated hair in 2016 wanted to give back again, but this time with her friend, Lynn Tegler. Mrs. Tegler is also a volunteer enthusiast, not only in her children’s schools, but also in church, and in her community. Lynn stated she “wanted a change, but wanted it to help others, especially children”. Having three boys at home of her own, helping children is something she’s driven to do. The event took place on November 11, 2019 at 11:45. Dr. Solkov said as she was finishing up with her new haircut, “It really doesn’t matter if you are rich or poor. You can always give your time, your money, or your hair, to help others”.
The organization receiving the donation is a non-profit called Children with Hair Loss which provides human hair replacements at no cost to children and young adults facing medically-related hair loss. They currently provide a customized human hair replacement and care kit to over 300 children a year.
