The Barkery at BCTHS

We must admit – most of us love our pets more than we do some humans!  They love us unconditionally and in return we enjoy spoiling them with treats!   Our Skills for Life Academy faculty have come up with an outstanding idea to overcome some hurdles in teaching key skills to their students.  Skills for Life Academy teacher, Ms. April Bates, explains below:

“Due to the pandemic, the young adults in The Skills for Life Academy have experienced a few hurdles attending Community Based Instruction and Work Experience Programs.

To offer a different approach to learning employability skills, the students have been introduced to their very own business.  The Barkery at BCTHS allows the crew to practice functional academic skills while applying job skills within the school environment.  With a team mindset, the students are responsible for budgeting ingredients, delegating jobs, measuring, reading recipes and order forms, baking, packaging, and delivery.

We pride ourselves on customer service and are open to any suggestions and feedback.  The students gain a sense of confidence as they are able to call this business their own and are able to add this experience to their resume.  The team is also exposed to the opportunity to apply appropriate social and conversational skills during the delivery to staff.

It is our hope that The Barkery of BCTHS can establish a successful foundation and production rate to be a permanent part of The Skills for Life Program.”
